Imagine this. You're sitting at your desk, pen in hand ready to write the world's best story but suddenly...... You pause. "I don't know what to write!" you scream.

If you are one of these people, you are not alone. In fact, about 24% of people face writer's block daily and another 74% of people face writer's block occasionally.

Now, there are a few strategies to overcome writer's block but the main strategy that we're going to be talking about today is the use of writing prompts.

What is a writing prompt?

A writing prompt is a sentence or image that is meant to spark inspiration for a writing project. A writing prompt is available for all genres and is a fun way to unleash your creativity.

Where to find writing prompts?

There are a ton of websites out there on the internet that offers writing prompts to writers. One of my favorite websites is.........

Reedsy!

Reedsy is a free site for writers but the main feature that I really like about this site is the high variety of writing prompts. They have all the genres of writing prompts that you could possibly want

Also, writers can post their stories directly onto their website so you can take inspiration from other authors.

But you can also just do a simple google search by typing: Writing prompts (Genre)

How to use writing prompts:

There are no set rules for how to use a writing prompt but I like to use the 5-5-5 method.

The 5-5-5 method is simple:
1. You want to write whatever comes to mind about you're writing prompt for 5 minutes. Don't stop to think about what you're writing or edit (you will have a chance to do that later) just write.
2. Put away all those ideas and do something that is not related to writing for 5 minutes. Go outside, eat a snack, or just take a break! This will help your brain relax and get more creative
3. Lastly, edit your ideas and see which ones you like.

I really like this method because of how simple and easy it is to follow but remember this very important statement. This is the number one thing I would tell any writer.......

WRITING doesn't have RULES! You CREATE them!

If you find this method doesn't work for you, then do whatever you feel is right.

In Conclusion:

Writing prompts are awesome! They can help you overcome writer's block and get the creative juices flowing in your brain. Overall they're just a great way to practice the craft of writing while having fun!
