This is one of the first short stories I ever wrote. I believe I was in grade 4 when I wrote this story so it's been a few years but I loved reading the story because it shows how much I have grown as a writer. I hope you enjoy it!
I was an orphan ever since I was a little girl and was bounced about in many different foster cares where no one seemed to get that life was a big struggle until I met them.
When I was about ten years old, I got put into foster care with a young couple that lived just a few blocks away from the orphanage. Their house was stunning and close to the beach. I could always smell the aroma of the salty sea coming in with the breeze. From the day I arrived, they treated me like I belonged. They understood my struggles and raised me like I was their own.
We were all happy as the years went by until they started getting sick. We went to many hospitals and a week later we found out that both my parents had cancer. At that point, there was no cure. It was painful to watch them getting sicker every day. I made up my mind that when I grew up, I would find the cure. A few years later, I became a researcher at a hospital that wasn't far from where I lived with my parents.
One morning, while I was cleaning the fireplace, I found a beautiful necklace hidden underneath the burnt logs. It looked pretty with precious stones glued to its sides. I hurried off to work with the beautiful piece of jewelry tied around my neck. I admired myself in the mirror, feeling lucky I was to have stumbled upon this beautiful treasure.
My name is Abigail Whitelace. In my life, I always felt that something was missing. Little did I know that I had to go on one incredible journey to find out what it was.
I worked late at the hospital that night. The new study I had created was almost finished. I almost found a cure for cancer until the government stopped funding the project. They declared our work to be unfit results, and without any more, money we were forced to close down.
Tears sting my eyes threatening, to come down, but I hold them in. I felt like I had let my parents down. I rushed outside to my car and drove away. Claps of thunder roared in the sky as heavy rain began to pour down. I could barely see. Just as I was about to make a turn, the necklace around my neck began to glow. It grew so unbearably bright that I lost control of my car and crashed, lying there unconscious.
When I woke up, I was no longer in my car but beside a long lake surrounded by rich vegetation. I could see large figures approaching, but the sun was in my eye and made everything look blurry. The wind ruffled my hair as I pulled myself off the ground. It was then that I realized the large figures were dinosaurs probably coming to have a drink from the lake.
I quickly scrambled to my feet and looked for somewhere to hide. I found the perfect spot behind a large tree with its green leaves covering me safely out of sight. I watched amazingly as the massive dinosaurs bent their necks and drank the cool, clear water from the lake.
Dinosaurs were extinct millions of years ago, and where was I? The necklace in my pocket flashed a message Jurassic period it read. WHAT! How could this be? I didn't belong in the Jurassic period! Had I time-traveled to the past, and if so, could I get out? I decided to look around. Maybe there was a way I could go back home. I walked through a long grass field hiding, low behind the tall blades of grass. I certainly didn't want to attract more dinosaurs!
Once I had crossed the field, I came across a large swamp, too big to jump across. Luckily, I spotted some thick vines on the ground. I twisted many of those together until it made a strong rope. I tied it to a sturdy tree then, swung across the swamp, and landed safely on the other side.
On the other side was a magnificent sight. I was standing on a large cliff and could see other mountains and trees in the distance. The wind brushed against my skin pleasantly as the sun started to sink low in the sky. As I was enjoying the view, something strange happened. The ground began to shake underneath my feet. I watched, horrified as red lava came flowing down from the mountains. Those weren't mountains. They were volcanoes!
I ran as fast as I could while hot lava was streaming behind me. I ran until I came to a dark forest. Should I go through it? I thought to myself. I had no time to decide! The sky was black, thick with smoke. I ran into the forest.
Lava was pouring into the forest, and I was getting tired! I didn't want to die with the dinosaurs! I remembered everything that had happened to me before I had come on this dangerous journey. My study being shut down, my childhood days, the rich family always discouraging me. Each of these events seemed like the most traumatic event of my life and can never be fixed if I managed to overcome those challenges, I could overcome this! I felt this surge of power! I could do this! I ran as fast as lightning away from the lava.
Each of these events felt like the most traumatic event of my life and can never be fixed, but if I managed to overcome those challenges, I could overcome this! I felt this surge of power and hope! I could do this! I ran away as fast as I could like a lightning bolt.
Suddenly, as if by magic, everything froze! Lava stopped gushing from the volcano. The lava behind me froze like ice. A glowing ball of light appeared in front of me. I felt drawn to it, but the minute I touched it, I got sucked in.
I don't remember what happened inside the glowing ball of light. The necklace probably fell off while I was running. I was back home safe and sound. I understand now I have to go after my dreams and believe that I can achieve them. Although all the events life brings are not always happy, you have to remember to push through them to find the glowing light to guide you back.
I'm done reading this and all I have to say is: GO TO THERAPY.
